Exodus 31:3
Exodus 31:3
“— I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills—”
What is this scripture? What does it mean? Why is it so important? Why is this the cornerstone of this business?
I am sure we could use many other flashier scriptures, so why on earth this one? Well, it defines the significance of everything we do and stand for.
First, let’s break down the scripture.
The entire scripture is Exodus 31:1-11. Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt, and they are on Mount Sini waiting on the next instructions from God. God is telling Moses that he has let His Spirit rest on two particular men to gain the knowledge on how to create and make things with their hands.
But why is this even significant?
People have been on this earth for thousands of years; of course, they can make things that they can create. I mean, they just left Egypt, EGYPT!! I mean grand palaces Egypt, one of the 7 wonders of the world Egypt, Pyramids Egypt when the pyramids were new. So gaining the knowledge to create doesn’t seem like a big deal, right, wrong. This scripture is the first time the Holy Spirit dwells within a human on this earth.
Okay, but who or what is the Holy Spirit?
Again that’s a great question, lol. The Holy Spirit is just that the spirit of God, the last part of the 3 fold God: Father, Son and Spirit. In less complicated terms, He is the essence of God. Look at yourself; we as humans say that we are creatures with a mind, a body and a soul. Well, it’s the same for God. Genesis 1:26-27 says that God wanted to create humanity in His image, so He created male and female with a mind (God), a body (son) and a soul (Holy Spirit). Catching the picture now?
“Let there be light”
The first time we are introduced to the Holy Spirit is Genesis 1:1, where it said the Spirit of God was hovering over the vast expansion waiting on the word, waiting in anticipation to make, create, and bring into existence. Once God spoke one of argumentatively His most famous lines, “Let there be light,” the Spirit went to work instantaneously in bringing those words to life. Once the totality of creation was done (the end of chapter one), we do not hear mention of the Spirit again until Exodus 31: 3.
The Spirit,
is the essence of God and the essence of creation itself. It allowed humans to bring into existence a place where God was able to dwell amongst His people when He couldn’t see them face to face. So I would say it’s pretty significant.
We create because God was creative first.
When I heard that in my devotional, I was floored, the first thing He ever did was create out of nothing into something. We are just following in His footsteps bring to life thoughts and ideas, the imagination into something tangible. And the Holy Spirit is the essence of our creative existence. These days we know that the Holy Spirit is who we walk our faith journey out with us on a day-to-day basis since the death and resurrection of Jesus according to John 14: 25-27 & Acts 1: 4-5. We have full access to tapping into the power to create and make works of art where God can dwell and appreciate on this earth as he once did before.
So in a way here and now “—I have filled [all of us] with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills—” Exodus 31:3 what you see here and now is just the Spirit in work in us, through us, and around us. Something tangible to remind us that He still makes and creates works of art.
